The marvellously warm days of late December brought more of the snowdrops in the garden to life. Three Ships is still flowering three weeks on but is now joined by the amazing Mrs Macnamara. Often she is flowering by Christmas but this year unaccountably she delayed her appearance until January. Now that I have cleared the still lush foliage of Penstemon White Bedder which had been protecting her earliest shoots, the sun has been able to reach in and she is in full beauty. Everywhere in the garden and the wood the silvery spears of snowdrops can be seen pushing through the earth – a wonderful and inspiring sight and the main reason why we love our snowdrops so much.
